Our last stop before dinner was Krafla Volcanic Area. 100,000 years ago, a volcanic cone caved in after erupting and formed a Viti crater that is now filled with water. Major eruptions, known as the Myvatn fires, occurred between 1724 and 1729, with the most recent series of eruptions between1975 and 1984.
Krafla has been a major source of geothermal energy used by a 60 MWe power station since 1977.
The hot water is piped to the power plant
